Most essential oils are extracted from steam distillation using a copper still. Some are extracted via CO2 extraction. The process depends on the plant and what technique best preserves the scent compounds. For more on our sourcing standards, read here.

There are two main methods of making flower essences. The sun method is for delicate flowers and involves floating the flower heads in pure water for three hours, in direct sunlight.

The boiling method is mostly for woodier plants and those that bloom when the sun is weak. The maker boils the flowering parts of the plant for half an hour in spring water.

In both cases the heat transfers the energy in the flowers to the water.  The energized water is then filtered and an equal quantity of brandy is added to it as a preservative.  This creates the mother tincture. The mother tincture is then further diluted to make flower essences

Gem elixirs are made in a similar method to flower essences. We select gemstones with specific healing properties, cleanse them, and then soak them in a bowl of spring water. At Nectar Essences, we use the sun and moon method for a period of 28 days, beginning on the new moon and harvesting at the full moon.

Please note that if you are making your own gem elixirs, exercise caution. Some gems are poisonous and the elixir made from them should never be ingested. Conduct proper research prior to making your own gem elixirs.

Our products are diluted for adult use. If you would like to use the essential oils for children 3 and up, dilute 3 drops into a teaspoon of a neutral oil such as coconut or sunflower oil, for topical application.

Generally speaking, essential oils can be quite toxic to household pets, so we advise you do not use them directly on your pets. If you wish to mist their bedding or diffuse an aroma for them, go right ahead. We have received many messages from Nectar Essences users commenting that their pets enjoy the scents.

It is unusual, but some people are allergic to a specific plant, lavender for example, and might develop a headache from inhaling that plant’s essential oil.

The most common reason people get headaches from essential oils is because you are having a negative reaction to a synthetic fragrance. Unfortunately, many essential oils are sold with synthetic fragrances added into them as a cost saving measure. At Nectar Essences, our essential oils are lab tested for purity. We never, ever use synthetic fragrances.

Many products labeled ‘natural’ or ‘made with essential oils’ can give you a headache because they contain synthetic fragrances derived from petroleum. Since fragrance is considered a trade secret by the FDA, manufacturers are not required to list synthetic fragrances on their labels. If you get a headache, it can be a tell-tale tell sign that what you’re using is not pure.

We like the breathing ritual as the primary introduction of the remedies. Bathing, body rituals and diffusing can be equally beneficial but breathing often has the clearest response. At the Nectar headquarters, we often do foot baths with the remedies, as well as a constant diffusing habit.

Perform the breathing ritual, breathing through your mouth or experiment with the other rituals: bathing, body, bless or diffusing.

When you’re getting sick, it is possible to accelerate your healing process or ‘nip it in the bud’. Try our decongest, immunity or super-immunity for best results. If you don’t have those on hand, use whichever one you have, as every one of our remedies contains antimicrobial essential oils.

Depends. Sometimes you will see instant results, other times, benefits increase with continued use. Essential oils, flower essences and gem elixirs, like all natural medicines, are not instant fix-its. They help your body create equilibrium and generally become more effective over time.

Essential oils are generally regarded as safe (GRAS) and shouldn’t have any negative interactions with medications, but it is always best to check with your physician.
